*The reader familiar with some of the recent literature on imitation will realize that what I’ve described here is disparagingly called “goal emulation”, and not imitation, by Whiten et al. (e.g., 2009: 2418-19), and others. Until someone suggests a neurological substrate underlying their perception-ignoring conception of imitation, I’ll argue that the PCT interpretation includes all levels; so imitation is goal emulation -- all the way down.
